During 2026, particularly in April, the Tigris River in the northern parts of Wasit Governorate experienced a significant episode of water pollution that adversely affected water quality from both environmental and public health perspectives. This deterioration raised serious concerns regarding the suitability of river water for drinking, domestic uses, irrigation of agricultural crops, and meeting the water requirements of livestock. The results of river water sample analyses revealed elevated concentrations of several chemical, physical, and biological parameters, as well as heavy metals, with some values exceeding the permissible environmental limits. Therefore, it is essential to investigate this pollution crisis and scientifically identify its underlying causes in order to mitigate its adverse impacts and develop effective measures for its long-term control. Continuous monitoring is also required to prevent the recurrence of similar pollution events in the future, given their potentially serious environmental consequences for human health and various other aspects of life. Accordingly, greater attention should be devoted to scientific studies and research in the field of water pollution, commensurate with its environmental significance and its direct impact on society.
